Just as nirvana for golfers is to own a home within a chip shot of a championship course, life can’t get much better for anglers than a prime fishing river at the end of their garden – and the rights to fish it. The sport continues to grow, with an enormous cross-section of people of widely differing ages taking to our rivers, lakes and canals. It is particularly growing in popularity with women.

Research shows that 20 per cent of us have been freshwater fishing at some time over the past ten years. Which helps explain why owning the fishing rights to a river considerably enhances the value of a home – but it’s difficult to say by how much.
