When my wife’s younger, grown son asks me if I’ll take him fishing, well, it fills me with warm fuzzies. I do my best to comply. Jesse Boven is his name and he’s now 22 years old, living on his own with three other guys in an apartment near the Western Michigan University campus. He’s come a long way from the chubby kid with shaggy hair who, at age 11, had his mother cutting meat on his plate.
He’s probably not going to like that revelation, but it does illustrate just how much he’s grown up. After getting a degree in criminal justice, he now works for Kalamazoo County in a juvenile home, and aspires to become a fulltime law enforcement officer. Wife Kathy and I are both extremely proud of him. We don’t get to see him much, which is a shame because he’s one of those guys who is just fun to be around.
