Detroit fishing derby a lure for crowds of kids

Majae Norwood’s fishing bobber dipped, her grandpa let her know she had a bite then the 10-year-old reeled in her catch at Palmer Park in Detroit today. “I got my first fish today!” the excited Novi girl exclaimed about her hand-sized hybrid bluegill.

She participated in the 21st annual Detroit Area Kids Fishing Derby with her cousin, Rakai Norwood, 4, of Canton. About 500 kids were expected to fish Saturday at Lake Frances, event founder Gary Williams told the Free Press. “We put almost 3,000 fish in there on Thursday,” he said. “And strategically placed these fish all the way around Lake Frances.”
