A six month ban on sea bass fisheries described as “Draconian” by West MPs will kick in from January, following the conclusion of negotiations in Brussels. However, the region’s fishing fleets could benefit from a “significant” boost to their hake and sole quotas, as well as maintained quotas for monkfish and pollock.
The confirmation of fishing quotas for 2016 comes at the end of two days of negotiations with fellow EU member states. It also comes almost 12 months after the first phase of the discard ban was introduced. Fisheries minister George Eustice said “tough decisions” made by the UK in previous years are “paying off”. “These negotiations are the culmination of months of government-led work to secure the best possible deal for the UK fishing industry,” he said.
