It will be an eel of a time at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science on Aug. 23. Come to this family-friendly event to learn about these slimy fish with snake-like bodies. This Discovery Lab will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will include hands-on activities and exhibits for children and adults. This event is free, but reservations are required.

Cobia fishing is as good as it gets right now. Regulations for the 2017 season are being developed. The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council will hold a public hearing and scoping meeting on cobia management at 6 p.m. Aug. 9 at the Hilton Virginia Beach, 3001 Atlantic Avenue.
