“It could happen to any of us.” The heart-wrenching tale of the missing angler at Lake Okeechobee still has no resolution. And with each passing hour, hopes for a miracle have faded. It is feared Nik Kayler — father, husband, veteran and angler — has been lost.
Part of me hopes some duck hunter headed out to bag a limit of black-bellied whistling ducks and ring-necks hears a guy holler to him from one of the lake’s million or so grass islands. I’d love to see television news crews clamor for a shot as a camouflaged Gheenoe returns to Roland and Mary Ann Martin’s Marina in Clewiston with a frozen and rugged, but alive, Nik Kayler on board. He would have one heck of a story to tell.
