High school bass fishing has student-athletes learning on the water

Merrimack Valley sophomore Liam Chapman plays lacrosse year-round, but in the fall he likes to slow things down and get on the water. Chapman makes up one half of the MV bass fishing team, along with classmate Jacob Downs. The pair competed in the championship on Saturday on Lake Sunapee, and although they could not capture the title – that honor went to Kearsarge with a haul of eight fish for nearly 25 pounds – the MV anglers rejoice in the chance to compete on a statewide level.

It is a unique opportunity, after all. New Hampshire became just the third state to adopt bass fishing as a high school sport in 2013, sanctioned by the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association. Vermont joined
the list earlier this year when the Vermont Principals’ Association voted to incorporate competitive bass fishing, modeling its system after New Hampshire.
