Hot times and hot fishing

Here’s the good news: Good bass and pickerel fishing in shallow water is available in Delmarva waters in the hottest weather. Here’s the bad news: This can be — if you’ll pardon the four-letter word — WORK.

Here’s the critical news: Hot weather can be deadly. You must exercise caution and take measures to avoid overheating, dehydration and severe summer thunderstorms. A couple of weeks ago, in mid 90-degree weather, Joe Bruce and I tried a Delaware pond with extensive pad fields and other cover, a place that had been good to us in the past. We used our favorite set of tools — kayaks, spinning tackle with modern braided lines with 30- to 40-pound mono leaders, weedless frogs and flukes.
