Lake Berryessa leads local big bass parade

Lake Berryessa … leads the widespread local 2016 big bass parade so far. St. Helena angler Manny Frias sent me this photo of his fishing partner, Napan Eric Dolen, with a massive 12.2-pound largemouth bass he caught on a Texas-rigged green pumpkin Brush Hog Feb 29. They like to fish at night when the big bruisers feel safer in the dark and seem more willing to bite. Over the past couple of years, Manny has sent me a wonderful string of photos of the big nocturnal bass he’s fooled at Berryessa and Hennessey.

Napa River … Before the weekend rains, ace field scout Tom Dudenhoeffer at Sweeney’s Sports in Napa (255-5544) said “Sturgeon fishing has been very good from Kennedy Park south to the Highway 37 Bridge with some keepers in the mix along with a number of oversized and undersized diamondbacks. Anglers have been using splittail for huge stripers up to 45 pounds, and a number of the big fish have been kept…”
