In the past few days I have been asked to respond to a Telegram column by Paul Smith dated July 13th and advocating the benefits of hook and release of Atlantic salmon. (“A debate that should not be.”)

This gentleman travelled to Russia to fish the Ponoi River. It’s not cheap to travel that distance from Harbour Grace. First, one must fly to Toronto from St. John’s, then fly to England, and from England to Helsinki, Finland, and on to the Ponoi River in Russia. I do not know the cost, but I could not pay for this.
