Like big bass? Head to Bullards Bar

A world-class fish story with a crazy twist emerged this past week from Bullards Bar Reservoir, a Northern California lake becoming known as America’s newest big bass factory. It started when two biologists and fishing buddies, Adam Koons and Naoaki Ikemiyagi, started roaming Northern California with their kayaks to fish lakes for giant spotted bass. They ended up at Bullards Bar in the northern Sierra foothills east of Marysville.

“I was out there specifically targeting big fish,” Koons said. Earlier, Ikemiyagi had caught a pair of 7-pounders on back-to-back casts. This is the same lake where, in early winter, Paul Bailey reportedly caught an 11-pound, 4-ounce spotted bass that would have qualified as a world record but was released without it being certified.
