Local man opens pond for special needs fishing day

People usually do not see a need until a situation impacts them directly, but an annual fishing outing here testifies to the power of a need meeting a vision.

About 440 special-needs students and volunteers from several area schools and the community gathered at Joe Phillips’ three-quarter acre pond Friday for the 20th annual “Fishing with Angels” event. The event started with just three special-needs students in 1997 but has blossomed to a major event that has earned 501(c)3 nonprofit organization status, has a board of directors, draws hundreds of volunteers and requires thousands of man hours invested.
