INTERLOCHEN – For the last few years, Chris Noffsinger hasn’t been doing a lot of late fall fishing. The 42-year-old bass pro has been involved in an out-of-state deer hunting outfit and he’s been guiding for whitetails. Noffsinger has cut back on that and, consequently, has spent more time on the water in this bass-rich corner of the state. And it’s been paying off.
I met up with Noffsinger, one of the state’s best-known smallmouth bass guides recently for a short day recently and though we didn’t light ‘em up – we caught about 10 bass in a little less than five hours – what we lacked in quantity, was made up with quality. Every fish we caught was a dandy – including the 14-inch perch that thought it was a bass. But more importantly, he helped educate me on one of the hottest trends in bass fishing – umbrella rigs.
