Population growth ‘doesn’t look good for future of fishing’

A report into the state of recreational fishing in New Zealand says Kiwis may need to scale back their catches. Titled What’s the Catch?, the New Zealand Initiative’s paper suggests our current approach to fishing for fun just isn’t sustainable.

But recreational fishing spokesperson Scott Macindoe says “gross mismanagement” is to blame for fewer catches by non-commercial anglers. “For the last 30 years we’ve lived in false hope that privatising commercial fishing interests would turn these hunters into farmers… Sadly we’re still seeing the same archaic, bulk harvesting bottom destruction trawl, trashing our oceans.
