Safety warning ahead of last abalone fishing day of the season

Abalone fishing is extremely popular. At the beginning of this season, back in November last year, 10,000 people were expected to descend onto Trigg Beach alone for the first Sunday of licensed fishing. Since 2012 three people have died while abalone fishing and in the past three years Surf Life Saving WA has rescued 42 fishers.

Tomorrow is the last Sunday of the season with licence holders entitled to fish for abalone between 7am and 8am in the Perth metro area. “We urge fishers to be aware of the size and bag limits. Attach your measuring gauge to your wrist rather than hanging it around your neck and carry your catch in the loose-weave net bag that won’t become a dragging weight.”
