SCSU bass fishing club balances competition, recreation

Competition sent St. Cloud State University’s Husky Bass Fishing Club to southern waters this spring for 12 days of travel, prefishing and tournament action on a reservoir that required an entirely different technique than Mille Lacs or the Mississippi.

A couple of weeks after the FLW College Fishing tournament, a Central Conference qualifier on Missouri’s Table Rock Lake, competition fueled talk about which teams had the edge, which baits worked best, how many jigs were lost. “There’s one thing to catch a 5-pounder on a regular Sunday in the morning on a frog, and the next thing, completely different, to hooking one in a tournament. Your heart’s pumping,” said Alex Almich. “It’s the same adrenaline rush you get throwing a touchdown, and catching a touchdown.”
