The black jewfish is one of the Territory’s iconic sport fishing species due to their large size and widespread abundance. They can grow to over 1.5m in length and weigh over 30kg. Jewfish can be targeted in many areas and have a great affinity for artificial reef systems.
They can be found in shallow estuary waters and well offshore in water over 100m in depth up to 100nm off the coast. Jewfish can be caught on bait, but also regularly take artificial lures. Many anglers like to target them on soft plastics and soft vibes which seem to work particularly well on them. They can also be caught on hard bodied lures and are often caught when trolling or casting for barramundi.
