Fish and eels were being chased on all sides in Opunake yesterday as the annual take-a-kid-fishing contest began at daybreak. More than 70 primary and preschool aged children and their grownups had registered for the contest, said Lyn Collins of Collins Sports Centre, which has run the event each summer for the past 24 years in conjunction with the Opunake Surfcasting and Angling Club.
The evening weigh in usually produced a range of fish large and small, some eels and a few trout, she said. Every young contestant was guaranteed at least one fish, with a good supply of the chocolate variety on hand along with a pile of prizes that would be awarded through a lucky dip.
